Perpignan has long been a favourite with tourists who use the picturesque French town as a base for exploring the surrounding Languedoc-Roussillon region. A centre for French-Catalonian culture, Perpignan has a number of sights for tourists to enjoy, including the cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Cathedrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perpignan), the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, and the Perpignan train-station, inspiration of the famous Catalan artist Salvador Dali. Perpignan is ideally located inland from the Mediterranean coast, within easy driving distance of Narbonne (to the north along the A9/E15) and Girona (to the south on the AP-7/E15). In the mountainous region behind Perpignan lies the town of Prades whilst the coast is dotted with ideal beach locations such as Sainte-Marie and Canet-en-Roussillon.

Perpignan is serviced by the Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport (Aéroport de Perpignan-Rivesaltes), sometimes referred to as Llabanère Aiport. Although small, the airport has two runways and sees over 700,000 passengers a year, most of whom holiday in the surrounding region. The airport is located approximately four kilometres north of Perpignan town centre directly off the A9/E15 motorway. The single terminal services flights to and from Paris (Air France), Southampton (FlyBe), Birmingham, Charleroi and London-Stansted (all Ryan Air), and Manchester (BMI-Baby). Car hire facilities are available in the terminal, including Avis, Alamo, Europcar, Budget, National and Hertz. As the Languedoc-Roussillon region does experience warm summers (temperatures sometimes reach 30°C) and cool winters (minimum temperatures can get close to freezing) it is recommended you ensure your hire car has both air conditioning and heating facilities.
